Singapore casino attracting "overwhelming" interest

2010-02-16 12:47:26

The new Resorts World Sentosa casino and theme park in Singapore is attracting "overwhelming" interest since launching at the weekend.

Opening on Valentine's Day (February 14th), the gambling establishment saw 35,000 people arrive within a two-day period, writes Wang Eng Eng for Channel NewsAsia.

This made up nearly half of the 75,000 tourists who visited the island to celebrate the first day of the Lunar New Year - a 20 per cent rise on 2009 figures.

Commenting on the surge of interest, vice-president of communications at Resorts World Sentosa Krist Boo said the queues are "very overwhelming".

Some people must wait up to two hours to enter the gaming venue, while those looking to eat in local restaurants are also required to hang around for about 30 to 40 minutes.

The casino opening had been delayed for a number of months due to the owners, Genting, needing to wait for authorities to provide them with a gambling license.
