Cross-border casino gets go ahead

2010-02-02 07:27:41

US residents of Akwesasne have given offered their consent to the tribal government's intentions to launch an off-reservation casino in the region.

Akwesasne, which straddles the US and Canadian border, could now see a gambling establishment set up in the Catskills region of New York State, Standard Freeholder reports.

A referendum was held last Saturday (January 30th), in which the local population registered 538 votes for the casino, while 371 were against the move.

According to the news provider, officials had put a large amount of work into engaging the public ahead of the ballot.

David Staddon, director of public information for the St Regis Mohawk Tribe, stated: "Clearly, that (effort) was successful."

Mr Staddon went on to say that there is still a five-day appeal period before the result is completely certified.

Another region keen to introduce casinos is New Jersey, senator Paul Sarlo stated, as it could provide valuable revenues, NorthJersey.com recently reported.
