Crown Casino set for expansion

2009-05-12 16:54:57

Melbourne's Crown Casino is set to expand its gaming area under a new deal with the Victorian state government.

Around 100 traditional tables are to be added at the venue, as well as 50 poker tables.

And in return for the permission to make the changes, the government is to receive an additional 1.7 per cent in tax from gaming machines in each of the next six years.

James Packer, executive chairman of Crown, welcomed the deal, noting that licensing restrictions had previously limited the casino's growth.

"These new arrangements now allow us to expand and improve the gaming floor in line with recent and future expansions to Crown's hotels, restaurants, retail and car parking," he said.

Meanwhile, casinos in Las Vegas could be set to become smoke-free after the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommended that Nevada's workplace smoking law be extended to cover gaming areas.
