Casino city planned for Spain

2009-04-27 16:57:00

Plans to build a casino city in the Spanish region of Aragon are set to go ahead, it has emerged.

According to the BBC, the area's parliament is about to approve a law that would see Europe's biggest entertainment and leisure complex built.

International Leisure Development (ILD) intends to create more than 30 casino hotels, as well as theme parks, golf courses and a dog track.

The news source notes that over 80 per cent of local residents are in favor of the scheme and ILD spokesman Jaime Riera explained that funding it will not be a problem despite the current economic climate.

Angel Torres, mayor of Ontinena - the village near which the Gran Scala development is set to be based - was also quoted as saying: "It's a great project and it represents the future of Ontinena, the region and all Spain, so the town council is strongly behind it to make sure it happens as quickly as possible."

Last week, the Albert Lea Tribune noted that casino profits are helping to fund educational grants in Iowa.
