Las Vegas Sands Macau projects to resume

2009-04-02 15:55:23

Construction work on Las Vegas Sands's Macau projects is poised to resume, it has emerged.

Speaking to reporters, Las Vegas Sands Asia president Stephen Weaver said the company was looking to start up the projects again later this year, Reuters reports.

He explained that when the projects were suspended, the company had only been nine months away from opening the first phase of the Cotai Strip work.

"The company has funds available at the parent level which, if needed, could be used to complete the project," Mr Weaver said.

"I think you should rest assured that this would be financed."

The projects were suspended last year when debt problems led to the majority of the 11,000 construction employees working on them being dismissed.

Las Vegas Sands's Macau projects are situated close to the company's Venetian Macao casino resort, which is the biggest of its kind in the world.

Macau is the richest casino destination in the world and was a Portuguese colony up until 1999.
