Colorado casinos 'holding up to recession'

2009-03-20 12:33:13

The gambling industry in Colorado appears to be holding up relatively well to the global economic crisis, with the latest statistics from the state's Department of Revenue showing that casino revenue fell marginally in February.

Gaming resorts in the Square State took $57.3 million last month, down $600,000 on the year before, when February had 29 days as opposed to 28.

This compares to Atlantic City, where casino revenues were down by 19.2 per cent between 2008 and 2009, according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission - the sharpest decline in the history of the destination's gaming sector.

After Nevada and California, Colorado has one of the largest casino industries in the US, with well over three dozen resorts.

Most of the casinos are located in Black Hawk or Cripple Creek, although several are situated in Central City.

Ameristar Casinos and Golden Gaming are among the major operators in the region.
