Mississippi casino revenue up 8% in January

2009-02-26 16:54:36

The amount of money won from gamblers in Mississippi casinos rose by eight per cent in January, new figures from the state's tax commission show.

Revenue reached $221 million, up from $204.3 million the previous month, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Casino sites located along the Mississippi River brought in about $13 million more than December and Gulf Coast halls took $99.1 million - an increase of approximately $3.5 million.

Despite state-wide revenue dipping by $3 million, deputy director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission Allen Godfrey claimed it was "a positive thing given the current economic status".

He was quoted by the Sun Herald as saying: "That's still pretty good compared to other jurisdictions."

The statistics follow news earlier this month that casino executives in Mississippi were not happy about proposed increases for fuel prices in the state.

According to the WLOX network, they were "confused and worried" about how business would be affected with a rise in utility expenditure.
