Figures show online gambling growth

New figures from internet analyst comScore have revealed substantial growth in the online gambling sector during 2008.

According to The comScore 2008 Digital Year in Review, which focuses on digital marketing trends in the US, internet gambling sites received 17.34 million individual visitors during December 2008.

This number is up by 4.6 million on December 2007, an overall increase of 36 per cent.

Online gambling was the sixth fastest rising website category during the year, behind job search (51 per cent), women (46 per cent), coupons (46 per cent), politics (43 per cent) and gay/lesbian (41 per cent).

In the top ten, it ranked ahead of radio (30 per cent), family (29 per cent), online gaming (27 per cent) and classifieds (27 per cent).

The report was published after search engine Lycos unveiled its latest top 50 search rankings, which featured poker - the top term for 2008 - in 18th.
