Gambling hotspot becoming popular for Brits

2009-01-13 12:12:17

The world's richest gambling destination, Macau, is becoming increasingly popular among British holidaymakers, according to a spokesman for the local tourist board.

Sue Whitehead of the Macau Government Tourist Office stated that in recent years the former Portuguese colony has experienced double-digit growth in visitors from the UK.

Even with the credit crunch affecting holiday plans and hitting Macau's economy, there still appears to be more Brits travelling to the Chinese administrative region than ever, with 6.41 per cent more making the trip between 2007 and November 2008, the general manager said.

Explaining the appeal of the district, Ms Whitehead commented: "Macau has a unique culture as a result of its Chinese and Portuguese heritage, and really offers something for everyone - not just those taking in the casinos."

A recent report by the Post Office suggested that Brits will look increasingly further afield for their holidays as the weak pound makes it more expensive to travel to nearby Europe.
