The introduction of online gaming for the iPhone is the start of a "huge, huge market" for the gambling industry, an expert has claimed.
Phil Clegg, InterGaming's editor-in-chief, stated that he believes the sector is heading for a "boom" period over the next five years as phone technology begins to catch up with what is required for mobile casinos to succeed.
At present, phone hardware is not quite sophisticated enough for people to begin using their phones for gambling, he suggested, but the development of smartphones such as the iPhone and the Blackberry is helping to drive the industry forwards.
Another issue has been payment systems, however, this area is also starting to catch up, with "more sophisticated" methods coming into the marketplace, Mr Clegg said.
Juniper Research's report Betting on a mobile future revealed that $1 billion was wagered on mobile phones during 2007.
This figure is expected to rise sharply between now in 2013, reaching more than $27.3 billion.
