'Impressive number' of female entrants at Chicago WSOP event

The number of women entering the ladies' World Series of Poker (WSOP) circuit event on Friday was "impressive", it has been said.

A total of 227 female entrants participated in the event, which was held at the new Horseshoe Casino in Chicago, collecting a prize pool of $44,038.

Tournament director Charlie Ceresi said no other women's event in the world allowed so much play and stressed that female players were receiving equal treatment to men.

The tournament lasted so long that players were not reduced to ten until 5pm, causing everyone to come back the next day rather than play through as had originally been intended.

According to its official website, the Horeshoe Casino is 20 minutes from downtown Chicago and hosts restaurants, concerts and shows as well as gambling.

Next month it will host a show by comedy star Bill Cosby, while a gig from Staind with Seether and Papa Roach is due to take place there in December.
