AC smoking ban extended

2008-10-15 12:11:47

William Marsh, Atlantic City's (AC's) city council president, has announced that the ban on smoking in the New Jersey gaming resort's casinos will continue until at least October 27th, it has been reported.

According to the Associated Press, Mr Marsh said the move had been made because there will not be enough councilmen available to vote in favour of lifting the restrictions until that date.

The smoking ban was introduced earlier in 2008 and is set to be implemented from today (Wednesday October 15th).

But AC officials recently decided that the ban should be postponed for at least another year and they intend to lift the restrictions as soon as is lawfully possible.

Smoking bans have been one of the biggest issues facing the casino sector in recent years and major industry figures, such as Donald Trump, have protested again the idea of one being introduced in AC.

The city's revenue figures have been declining steadily and getting rid of smoking would strike a hammer blow to casinos in the area, in the opinion of many experts.
