700 workers axed by Foxwoods

2008-10-01 12:54:27

Foxwoods Resort Casino is to lay off 700 workers after recording a significant fall in revenues last month.

The casino, based in Ledyard, Connecticut, has a total work force of 11,000 after hiring thousands of new staff for the opening of its MGM Grand expansion in May, reports the Hartford Courant.

The nation’s economic downturn in the context of the credit crunch was behind the decision, the article noted.

"Revenues have been fluctuating since the summer, but there was a significant drop in September," said Lori Potter, spokesperson for Foxwoods' owner and operator, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

"It's an across-the-board reduction. It's not focusing on any specific department,” she added.

Workers affected by the decision will be notified by October 17.

Foxwoods Resort Casino opened in 1986 and is one of the world's biggest gaming resorts alongside the nearby Mohegan Sun. It contains just over 1400 rooms across three separate hotels.
