Wilmington casino 'could create 5,000 jobs'

2008-08-14 12:39:22

The construction of a casino just outside Wilmington could create 5,000 jobs for the area, according to proponents.

While there has been some debate over whether or not to support the project, the additional employment opportunities have converted many, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer and Community Press.

The small community of 12,000 may be even more amenable to the complex as the largest private employer in the county - air delivery service DHL - is considering shutting down its operation there.

Roughly one in five of the voters in the region signed a petition in support of the casino, which eventually had over 800,000 names on it.

Rick Lertzmann, co-founder of MyOhioNow.com - which is seeking the ballot - commented: “We’re offering jobs when others are being lost.”

Meanwhile, four applicants including Pinnacle Kansas and Kansas Speedway are applying to build a casino in Wyandotte county, where the lay states that one casino can be constructed and managed by a developer for 15 years, reports the Associated Press.
