Danes are 'best tournament players'

2008-08-01 16:57:28

Recent research has found that Denmark's poker aces are the best tournament players in the world.

Card Player's tracking system mimicked the Olympics by ranking countries through a medal system, with first, second or third place finishers in major tournaments - such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) - being awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal respectively.

The Danes' record was impressive, gaining an average of 1.85 medals per million residents (MPMR).

US poker players came closest to the Scandinavian card sharps at 1.30 MPMR, with Australia in third place at 0.83 MPMR.

Jeff Schulman, chief executive officer of Card Player Media, commented: "The Olympics are almost upon us … It’s where minnows can triumph over titans, and that seems to be what’s happening in the poker world, too."

Gus Hansen is one of the most recognizable and successful poker names to come out of Denmark, having had five money finishes in the WSOP and won three titles on the World Poker Tour.
