Wanneroo mayor eyes casino project

2008-07-21 16:10:31

A casino is being looked at as a possible means of boosting the tourism industry in Wanneroo, Australia, the local mayor has revealed.

Jon Kelly told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that "a major infrastructure project" is needed for the region.

"One of the best ways to achieve this is to have a big win in terms of foreign investment and the tourism industry - and one of the best options in that respect is a casino," he remarked.

Should the proposal to build a resort near to Two Rocks go ahead, Wanneroo will become only the second city in Perth to have its own casino.

Australia is a country which is becoming more closely linked with the gambling industry, thanks mostly to the emergence of Crown Casinos as a major gaming power.

The James Packer-owned firm has purchased numerous resorts in the US over the past few months and runs one of the most successful casinos in gaming mecca Macau.
