Macau slot situation a 'concern'

2008-06-05 16:30:22

Makers of slot machines trying to break into the Macau casino market should perhaps be worried about the current situation regarding their sector in the region, it has been suggested.

Slots are failing to gain popularity in the world's most lucrative gaming market and in some places are actually being replaced to make more space for baccarat tables, Reuters reports.

Mark Yoseloff, Shuffle Master's chief executive, told the news provider: "If we were only in the slot machine business, I'd be concerned."

"Casino operators in some cases are moving slot machines from the floor. I don't know if it's a short-term or long-term issue."

Shuffle Master makes slot machines, but also has a presence in the card reader and card shuffler sectors as well.

Despite being a relatively small game in the west, baccarat is easily the most popular casino activity in the Far East and accounts for well over 50 per cent of revenue for gaming operators in China.
