Casinos in Macau will not be allocated part of five square kilometers of reclaimed land which is set to expand the size of the city, an official has confirmed.
Chief executive Edmund Ho followed up last week's announcement that no further land will be given to the gaming industry, by making it clear that the increase in land availability has not made any difference to China's plans to slow down the growth of the region's gambling economy, reports macauhub.
Macau is the world's largest casino destination and has grown by around 400 per cent since 2003, a phenomenal rate.
The local government is looking to stunt its boom, however - and hopes to do this through restricting the ability of casinos to grow in size and preventing new resorts from setting up.
Transport and public works boss Lau Si Lo said 40 per cent of the land will go on housing, while the rest will provide roads and leisure areas for the general public.
