Complimentary food given out at casinos in the state of Nevada will not be taxed in the future following a ruling by the region's supreme court.
Sparks Nugget casino had gone to the state's highest legal body to overturn a previous judgement by the Washoe County District Court, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The Reno resort, as well as many other gaming venues, is now trying to claim a refund from the tax office, with attorney Josh Bartlett stating the Nugget is owed as much as $1.6 million.
Of the seven supreme court judges, six found in favor of the casino, saying that complimentary food comes under the "food for human consumption" part of the Nevada's constitution. They claimed that there was no occasion after the purchase of the food when it should be liable for taxation.
John Ascuaga's Nugget is a medium-sized casino, which houses a poker room, bingo and keno facilities, dozens of table games, a sportsbook and 1,400 slots.
