Atlantic City casino staff to be essential workers?

2008-02-26 08:38:38

Workers at Atlantic City casinos should be classed as essential employees, according to New Jersey state senator Jim Whelan.

Mr Whelan, who spoke about focusing attention on the state's fiscal crisis when he was sworn into the senate on January 8th 2008, suggested that these workers need to be kept on in their respective jobs when there is a state emergency.

His comments came during discussions about keeping casinos open in the event of a government shutdown. He indicated that this may be the best way to prevent Atlantic City casinos from closing in such situations.

"Obviously, the casinos provide vital programs for seniors and the disabled with the $450 million they provide each year to the Casino Revenue Fund," the senator said.

Employees at other revenue producers, such as the state lottery and the racetracks, should also be seen as essential, he added.
