US 'could make $17.6bn from online gaming'

2008-02-11 11:47:08

The US has the potential to generate $17.6 billion over the next decade by taxing internet gambling, a new study has shown.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) - the world's largest accounting firm - was commissioned by the UC Group to carry out the study, according to Card Player.

When working out the figures, PWC took two separate scenarios into account, the lowest of which would see the US generate $8.7 billion.

The figures were calculated using revenue estimates from Global Betting and Gambling Consultants.

Poker was included in both totals; however, sports betting was not. If all the states in the US taxed online gambling, as well as sports betting, the overall figure could be over $40 billion, the study showed.

PWC, which has headquarters in London and New York, is one of the biggest auditing companies on the planet, alongside Deloitte and Ernst & Young.
