The development of MGM Mirage's proposed $5 billion Atlantic City megacasino has stepped up a gear this week as the company applied for an important permit that will allow it to proceed.
According to the Associated Press, the state of New Jersey's environmental permit is a "key" piece of paperwork for the resort, scheduled to open in 2012.
MGM Grand Atlantic City will be built on 72 acres of space between the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and Harrah's Atlantic City.
It will be the company's first 100 per cent owned casino in the city - it owns half of the Borgata - and will be another part of its expansion plans that have recently seen new casinos set up in Detroit and Macau.
The largest casino in the state, it will feature three hotel towers, one of which will be solely dedicated to high-rollers.
