Harrah's 'considering Rank bid'

2007-12-24 11:05:04

Harrah's Entertainment, the world's largest casino operator, is considering making a bid for a UK gaming company, it has been reported.

The US company had been rumoured to be looking at troubled firm Rank in recent months and now the Telegraph is reporting that Harrah's has appointed advisers to weigh up its options in the European market.

A source was quoted as saying: "I think this is a slow-burn situation for Harrah's.

"There's not a huge amount going on at the moment but they can move pretty quickly if they need to."

Malaysian firm Genting, which owns casino operator Stanley, recently acquired a stake in the firm in a move some felt was designed to block a potential bid by Harrah's.

Harrah's, which became 70 years old as of October this year, owns big casinos across the US as well as the biggest event in the sport of card playing, the World Series of Poker.
