Californian tribe sets out new casino plans

2007-12-14 17:46:45

The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians has unveiled plans for a $25 million desert casino resort in Twentynine Palms in Palm Springs.

In the first phase it will include 350 slot machines and will eventually boast a hotel, 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, a retail center and a golf course.

The Californian tribe believes the proposed 60,000 sq ft casino, near the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, will create much-needed jobs and boost the local economy.

Darrell Mike, chairman of the tribe, said the Nuwu Casino Resort project is "a good fit for the region".

"This project will deliver major long-term benefits to the local economy and create an exciting entertainment destination that local residents have wanted for years," he added.

Business enterprises of the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians include Spotlight 29 Casino, while philanthropic activities include the Native American Land Conservancy.
