2007-11-23 13:36:25

Atlantic City, perhaps the second most famous gambling destination in the US, is get a huge facelift over the next five years, it has been reported.

Saying that it will become "a more futuristic - and crowded - gambling resort", the Associated Press said that $9 billion will be pumped into the New Jersey destination in a bid to make it closer to Las Vegas.

President of the Casino Association of New Jesrsey Joseph Cobo said: "This is exactly the development cycle that Las Vegas has experienced over the past 15 to 20 years, and is what Atlantic City is poised to achieve as well."

According to Cobo, $12 billion has been invested in New Jersey since it opened its gaming industry, with $4 billion of that investment coming in the last four years.

The news provider suggested that by 2012 the city may be unrecognizable.

Casinos in Atlantic City have proven to be a popular venue for boxing matches over the past few years, with stars such as Arturo Gatti and Flod Mayweather Jr having fights there.
