Casinos - a substitute for income tax?

2007-11-19 16:53:10

A question has been raised by a reader of the Times, a newspaper covering Northwest Indiana and south-east Chicago, as to whether casinos should be a substitute for income tax.

Resident of Hammond, Andrew F Bakos, responded to the "constant reminder" that Lake County does not have a local income tax on the newspaper's website.

He said that "Lake is the only Indiana county with four casino boats providing more than adequate revenue to keep that away".

Another user, going by the name of tax_weary, responded by saying that Mr Bakos had made an "excellent point".

Between its casinos, Lake County has more than 6,500 slot machines and 250 gaming tables, according to Alllake.org.

The four casinos in question are the Horeshoe Casino, Trump Casino, the Majestic Star Casino and Harrah's.

Lake County is the best place in the Midwest for Las Vegas-style gambling, the website also states.
