2007-11-05 11:08:59

Two tribes in Massachusetts are competing to control the states gambling market, it has been reported.

Mohegan Sun owners the Mohegan and Foxwoods owners the Mashantucket Pequot are looking take advantage of the "large, untapped market", according to the Boston Globe.

The Mashantucket Pequot have a development deal with casino giants MGM Mirage.

Senior vice president for MGM's public affairs department Alan Feldman said: "We are interested in Massachusetts.

"There's interest on the part of everyone in the industry. We'll see where it all leads."

Massachusetts' governor, Deval Patrick, has made proposals to introduce new casinos to the state and will auction off operating licenses in south-eastern Massachusetts, western Massachusetts and Boston.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are two of the largest casinos in the world.

In the past Foxwoods has held big boxing events, such as Ricky Hatton's first ever fight in the United States against Luis Collazo.
