Colorado's casinos booming

2007-10-18 12:53:34

Gambling is on the up in Colorado's mountain casinos according to the state's Division of Gaming.

The Denver Post reported that gross revenue was $3.2 million higher this September than it was in September 2006.

Last year, casinos took $69.8 million. This year they took $73 million.

The figures do not take into account payouts so it does not give a proper indication as to how well the casinos are doing profit-wise.

Over half of the revenue was generated by Black Hawk which has 20 casinos. It took $51.4 million.

Cripple Creek took $14.3 million between its 17 casinos and Central City took $7.3 million from its six casinos.

The state of Colorado has been in the gambling news frequently over the past year, especially with regards to the UK's proposed supercasino venture.

Former deputy prime minister of the UK John Prescott caused an uproar when he stayed at billionaire Philip Anschutz's Colorado ranch.

Mr Anschutz was wanting to win the new supercasino bid.
