2007-09-26 15:11:29

Indian tribal casinos in Arizona generated $1.9 billion between June 2006 and June 2007, it has been revealed.

Official figures from the Arizona Indian Gaming Association show that this is a rise of 8.6 per cent on the previous financial year when $1.79 billion was reported.

More than $92 has been shared with the state to help fund schools, conservation, hospitals and tourism.

The tribes have given an additional $11.3 million to towns and cities of their own choosing.

Commenting on the state's successful gambling sector, Sheila Morago, who heads the gaming association, told the Arizona Republic: "We are still looking good. I am just glad we are still on the rise."

There are 15 tribes in Arizona and they own 22 casinos in total.
