Downtown Kansas City casino approved by county

2007-09-21 15:00:30

An Indian tribe's proposal to build a $20 million casino in downtown Kansas City has been supported by Wyandotte County politicians.

Policy-makers voted 9-1 to allow the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma to build the casino as long as casino revenues are used to pay for municipal and emergency services.

The agreement would allow the county to collect 3.5 per cent of the initial $10 million in casino revenues from the tribe, which already runs a casino in Oklahoma, reports KansasCity.com.

While gambling would be limited to players gambling against each other, politicians have agreed to support the tribe's efforts to win state approval for Las Vegas-style games.

"The people of Kansas City, Kansas will never be sorry the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma is part of their community," said chief Leaford Bearskin.

"It will be good for both of us."

The casino will be housed in the newly-refurbished Shriner's building across from Kansas City hall.
