400,000 sq ft gaming floor for Middleborough?

2007-09-14 14:42:35

Boston's Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, which is hoping to build a casino in Middleborough, have revealed the scale of the resort.

The gambling floor would measure 400,000 sq ft and the resort would be more than double this at 850,000 sq ft.

Around 180 table games and 4,000 slot machines, as well as a 10,000-seat auditorium, will be included in the resort if approval is granted.

"They must be planning to expand the number of slot machines because, at 400,000 square feet, there is lots of room," said gambling researcher Clyde Barrow in an interview with the Boston Globe.

The casino resort plans have been filed with the Department of the Interior, which will consider whether the project is viable.

In July, local residents voted 2,387 to 1,335 in favour of the casino. In return, the town will receive $250 million in infrastructure improvements and up to $11 million in annual payments if the project goes ahead.
