Multi-million dollar win 'due to malfunction'

2007-09-04 12:02:20

A woman who 'won' over $5 million on a slot machine in Macao has been told she may not receive her winnings.

After putting in only 60 cents, the slot machine, which had an upper limit of $6,000, indicated that she had won $5.5 million.

But staff at the Star World Casino told the middle-aged women from Hong Kong that machine must have malfunctioned.

Despite making a complaint to the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau, the woman has been told it would be unreasonable of her to expect such a large some of money from a slot machine.

However, the bureau said it would investigate the matter further before making a final decision.

Earlier this year, a 16-year-old Hong Kong girl won a $12,000 jackpot on a slot machine, but because she was deemed too young to gamble, the casino refused to pay out.

However, the gaming regulator punished the casino for allowing underage gambling by forcing it to pay the money to the girl's mother.
