Chicago colleges 'could teach casino courses'

2007-08-29 11:30:35

Community colleges in Chicago could soon be allowed to teach students about how to be a successful dealer in a casino.

Chancellor Wayne Watson said that City Colleges of Chicago has the capability of teaching young people how to work in the casino industry, including how to be a blackjack dealer, in addition to support roles.

He suggested that the casino industry could draft and subsidize a curriculum that could be taught by the college network.

"A lot of people think of casino jobs as just being the person who deals the cards or runs the roulette table. That's a small portion of casino jobs. A larger part is wait staff and support staff," he said.

The City Colleges of Chicago, established in 1911, comprises seven community colleges which provide learning opportunities for Chicago residents at the schools or online.

Over in Britain, a university is offering hands-on courses aimed at giving students experience in the gambling industry.

The University of Salford in Greater Manchester is teaching students how to run a "busy and successful entertainment centre" in partnership with the casino industry.
