The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has unveiled plans for an $800 million casino resort, it has emerged.
By 2012 it will include a new casino, a hotel, retail outlets, restaurants, conference space and a movie theater.
The resort will be built close to the existing Viejas Casino on the Viejas Reservation, east of San Diego.
Tribal chairman Bobby L Barrett stated: "Our tribe has a gaming agreement with the state that has been in place since 2004.
"This agreement has worked well and has benefited our tribal members, residents of San Diego County, and state taxpayers."
He went on to say that he hopes the new resort will make San Diego famous as a premier gaming and entertainment destination.
A recent report by the tribe into the impact of its businesses in San Diego found that 2,347 jobs have been created in the past year, with an $80 million payroll.
It has also and paid more than $67 million in federal, state and local taxes.
