Supreme court hearing for man who lost millions

2007-08-23 16:30:39

A man who blames a Melbourne casino for losing AUS $30 million ($24.5 million) looks set to face his opponents in the Australian supreme court.

Gold Coast property developer and gambling addict Harry Kakavas claims that Crown casino lured him back to the casino despite a self-imposed ban, reports Australian news site news.com.au.

Mr Kakavas, who is suing the casino for the money he lost plus damages, claims he was flown 32 times on Crown's VIP jet and was frequently handed boxes of money.

Crown has not filed a defence to the allegations and according to the news site, hopes to have the matter thrown out at a hearing in September.

The case echoes that of Iranian-born Behrouz Foroughi who voluntarily placed himself on an exclusion list at Star City Casino in Sydney but ended up suing for massive losses.

He claimed that security staff failed to enforce the list on more than 60 occasions and he subsequently lost AUS $600,000 ($506,000) playing roulette.
