Middleborough neighbors form casino taskforce

2007-08-13 17:03:56

A number of townships surrounding Middleborough in the state of Massachusetts have formed a taskforce in opposition to a new casino.

The taskforce is demanding that its voice is heard in all future decisions and has agreed to meet Massachusetts' economic secretary Daniel O'Connell at a debate on August 27th, reports the Boston Globe.

"Middleborough shouldn't get to decide this all by themselves," said Halifax selectman John Bruno.

"I don't think the people affected by [the casino] outside of Middleborough should just accept it because Middleborough likes it."

He went on to say that there is anxiety about higher levels of traffic in the area, which could affect public safety.

Middleborough selectman Adam Bond acknowledged that neighbouring towns have a right to speak up and he urged the taskforce to voice its concerns with the proper authorities.

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe hopes to gain control of 625 acres of land in order to build the luxury casino resort, with sole access from Route 44.
