Four Winds casino 'good news for Indiana'

2007-08-02 14:51:13

Four Winds Casino Resort, due to open today (August 2nd), will provide a much-needed boost to the economy of northwest Indiana, even though the casino is based in Michigan.

While there have been fears that the large size of the new casino will divert gamblers away from Indiana, local officials believe that it will have a positive impact on the local economy.

One of these officials is Speros Batistatos, president and chief executive officer of the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau, who believes that the casino has "spurred a ton of investment".

"It's going to provide more opportunities for people in the gaming industry to find more jobs, better jobs and to work up a career path," he told the Munster Times.

Situated near Lake Michigan in the New Buffalo Township, the casino has come into existence following years of legal wrangling.

It took six years for the Pokagon Tribe of Potawatomi Indians to win the right to build the $400 million casino after a series of lawsuits were filed by opponents worried about Four Winds' impact on the local area.
