Xao "Jerry'" Yang wins WSOP tournament

2007-07-19 16:56:34

The 2007 World Series of Poker Championship (WSOP) title has been claimed by Xao "Jerry" Yang, after a gruelling tournament.

It was only after 16 straight hours of playing at the final table that Mr Yang won the No Limit Hold 'Em Main Event.

Hailing from Temeculah, California, Mr Yang earned his $10,000 (£4,879) table at the event through winning Big Showdown Tournament in the Pechanga Poker Room.

In the last round of the hard-fought battle, Mr Yang was the chip leader with $104.5 million (£51 million). He proceeded to bet on pair of eights and his opponent, Tuan Lam, went all in with $23 million (£11 million) on his ace queen.

Mr Yang ended up winning on a straight, after five, queen, nine, seven and six were added. Thus Mr Yang took the $8.25 million in prize money and the 2007 WSOP gold bracelet.

The winner of the WSOP works as a psychologist and has six children.
