Smaller casinos 'will still go ahead'

2007-07-13 13:39:01

Despite effectively scrapping the supercasino project, the government has made efforts to show that it is still interested in granting licenses for 16 smaller casinos around the country.

The new culture secretary, James Purnell, has apparently attempt to reassure the relevant local authorities that Gordon Brown still supports the building of 16 casinos.

A report in the Financial Times notes that Mr Purnell has told the councils that the government would ask parliament to approve their locations in the autumn.

"I don't think there’s any question […] of anything changing in relation to them. I think the prime minister is happy with policy in relation to those 16," remarked a spokesman for the prime minister.

The leader of the opposition, David Cameron, has called on Gordon Brown to make a full statement to the House of Commons about the direction of the government's casinos policy.
