Manchester continues supercasino fight

2007-07-13 13:46:38

Councillors in Manchester, England have said that the creation of a Las Vegas-style supercasino on the east side of the city is "still on the table".

City leader Sir Richard Leese has held talks with ministers from the national government and is confident that all is not lost.

Sir Richard told the Manchester Evening News: "The council has had discussions with senior ministers in the past 24 hours and has been assured that the proposed destination of the casino at Sportcity remains on the table."

He went on to say that even if the supercasino is not built, then the government will help the city council meet its regeneration objectives.

It has been calculated that a supercasino would have created 3,000 jobs and brought £100 million ($200 million) to the city economy every year.

Prime minister Gordon Brown made it clear during a debate in the House of Commons earlier this week that he is not keen on the supercasino project and intimated that it should be scrapped.

This is despite the fact that a record number of Greater Manchester MPs are in his cabinet, one of whom is James Purnell, who is responsible for the gambling sector in Britain.
