Thousands of Sands chips destroyed

2007-05-10 17:11:47

Chips worth more than $61 million that used to be used at the Sands Casinos in Atlantic City have been removed from storage and destroyed, it has been revealed.

The 457,000 chips had been stowed away since the casino closed in November 2006, but new owners Pinnacle Entertainment has now removed all trace of the chips.

The destruction came as part of a clear-out of old Sands memorabilia and furniture ahead of the implosion of the building itself.

"Gaming chips in New Jersey have a lifetime value. It's just prudent not to have them lying around," explained Pinnacle spokesman Carmen Gonzalez, speaking to the Associated Press.

The news agency reports that a 51 foot truck containing a device akin to a giant hammer was brought in to ensure that the chips were properly destroyed.
Pinnacle is to replace what was Atlantic City's smallest casino with a new $2 billion venue by 2011.
