Representative introduces new gambling bill

2007-05-09 16:54:25

A Democrat Representative has introduced a new US Congress bill that seeks to study the impact of online gambling around the world, it has been revealed.

Shelley Berkley has introduced the bill in an effort to re-examine the workings of the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Bill (UIGEA), introduced in the US last year.

The proposed study would investigate the way that other countries around the world have regulated gambling instead of opting for prohibition, as well as looking into potential conflicts that currently exist between tribal, state and local gaming laws, PokerNews.com reports.

Last month fellow Democrat Barney Frank also introduced a gambling bill to the House, proposing that gambling be regulated and licensed.

The US has also come under pressure from the World Trade Organisation to reconsider its gaming laws in recent weeks, with Antigua and Barbuda among the other member nations keen to encourage a repeal of the UIGEA.
