'A quarter of Americans' visiting casinos

2007-05-09 11:01:41

A quarter of all Americans visited a casino during 2006, according to new figures released by US gaming officials.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has said that such statistics meant that total casino revenue rose to a record $32.4 billion during 2006 &ndash an increase of 6.8 per cent on 2005 figures.

The rise came on the back of a similar increase in the number of gambling outlets available to Americans, with 460 commercial casinos and 713 card rooms now available across the country, according to the Kansas City Star.

"Widespread public approval […] makes casino gaming a mainstay of the American entertainment industry," the paper reports AGA president Frank J Fahrenkopf as asserting.

The AGA also revealed that casinos contributed over $5 billion in tax revenues to regional governments.

Currently 19 states in the US support commercial gambling, with only Utah and Hawaii currently banning all forms of gambling outright.
