Bethlehem Steel to be replaced with $600m casino

2007-05-01 17:03:26

A steelworks responsible for producing parts of a number of American landmarks is to be replaced with a lavish new casino resort, it has been revealed.

Bethlehem Steel, a plant in Bethelem, Pennsylvania, which produced material now found in the likes of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Rockefeller Plaza and US Navy warships, is to be demolished in June to make way for the gambling venue, the Associated Press has reported.

The $600 million casino will feature a number of the plant's buildings as part of the resort, which will also feature a hotel, shops and entertainment sites. The casino will open in 2008.

Important steel artefacts such as engines and guns will be removed before the demolition takes place.

"I'm not going to stand in front of the bulldozers, because without the casino, we'd have nothing saved. Even with the demolitions, there will be more important historical buildings at the Bethlehem plant than at any other plant in America," said historian Lance Metz, speaking to the Associated Press.

Bethlehem Steel filed for bankruptcy in 2001 before being acquired by the International Steel Group in 2003.
