Online gambler numbers 'to quadruple' by 2020

2007-04-27 17:10:18

New research has revealed that there are currently 40 million people around the world that have gambled online, with this number predicted to rise to 160 million by the year 2020.

Researchers at iReach also revealed that 4.5 per cent of all mobile phone users have gambled via the mobile internet, Irish publication Silicon Republic has reported.

Ireland itself now contains around 340,000 online gamblers, the report added.

"The proliferation of new technologies has certainly helped shape a once embryonic marketplace with access to online gambling and gaming sites now aided through broadband internet, Wap technology and interactive television," said iReach business analyst Ara Cho, according to Silicon Republic.

Leading online software provider CryptoLogic recently announced that it was to move its headquarters from Toronto, Canada, to Dublin, Ireland.

Meanwhile the International Gaming Conference and Expo (IGCE) will be held in Dublin from May 6th to May 8th.
