WTO head hopeful on online gambling ruling

2007-04-26 17:07:08

The head of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) believes the US will ultimately agree to abide by its ruling on the online gambling process, it has been reported.

Director general Pascal Lamy told ministers of trade from around the world that he was confident that the US would eventually comply with its ruling that current laws violate free trade procedures, according to the Antiguan Sun.

The paper has said that Mr Lamy noted that all previous WTO rulings have been implemented by the US.

"The current law has had a deleterious effect on online gaming everywhere to the point where the European Union's internal market chief, Charlie McCreevy, has hinted that he may challenge the ban at the WTO," commented Antigua and Barbuda finance minister Dr Errol Cort, according to the paper.

The news comes as Democrat Congressman Barney Frank prepares to launch an attempt to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the US.
