A major media watchdog has criticised the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) as "an unreadable mess".
MediaChannel.org, designed to monitor information regarding media and democracy, criticised the law for the way in which it was passed through Congress in late 2006.
Reporting on the criticism, Online-Casinos.org notes that the comments include reference to the fact that the UIGEA makes special interest exceptions as well as being written in unclear and confused language.
"Congress deputizes private actors to block illegal activity without deciding for itself what constitutes illegal activity. As a result, banks and other money sources probably will curtail lots of legitimate activity to be on the safe side," MediaChannel noted.
Meanwhile, the deadline is drawing near for the Treasury and the attorney general Alberto Gonzales to draw up regulations regarding what measures banks must take in order to comply with the act. The 270-day period in which the rules must be completed expires on July 9th of this year.
