FBI investigates Second Life gambling

2007-04-04 16:35:51

The FBI has visited a group of virtual reality casinos in a further probe into gambling rules and regulations, it has been revealed.

Bureau officials reportedly assumed internet identities in order to enter the virtual reality online game Second Life and examine their casinos, Reuters has reported.

The online world currently hosts several million registered users. Casinos inside the game use Second Life's own internal currency, the Linden dollar, which has its own exchange mechanism with the US dollar.

Officials were invited to the game by Second Life creators Linden Lab.

"We have invited the FBI several times to take a look around in Second Life and raise any concerns they would like, and we know of at least one instance that federal agents did look around in a virtual casino," said Ginsu Yoon, formerly Linden Lab's general counsel and currently vice president for business affairs, according to Reuters.

Gambling within the game usually takes place via user created games with no central authority regulating the process.
