Confusion surrounds tribal gambling plans

2007-03-12 16:10:20

Canada's Mohawk First Nation has hit out at comments made by the solicitor general for Alberta after he suggested that one of the group's companies was assisting a separate band.

The Alexander First Nation has caused controversy in recent weeks after it begun hosting internet gambling websites for free, with solicitor general Fred Lindsay last week claiming that the Alexander band were being helped by Mohawk Internet Technologies (MIT).

Mr Lindsay had earlier advised that the Alexander First Nation should stop such practices, as they were illegal without the approval of the province.

However, the Mohawks of Kahnawake have dismissed Mr Lindsay's latest claims, saying it would be entirely counter-productive and even "moronic" for it to assist a rival commercial enterprise.

"Why would the Habs advise the Leafs, or the Sox advise the Yanks, on how to better organise their operation?" said MIT company official Chuck Barnett.
