Casino gambling could arrive in Texas

Two senators in Texas have proposed legislation that would allow Texan voters to decide on the future of gambling in the state.
Senator John Carona, a Republican, and Senator Rodney Ellis, a Democrat, believe that changing the law on gambling would allow more money to stay within Texas.
They explain that although gambling is illegal in Texas, residents simply leave the state to gamble in another area, so there is a demand for a regulated industry in the state.
Senator Ellis said that when it came to gambling: "Texans are already voting with their feet and going out of state."
Under the proposal, $1 million a year would be taken from the gambling profits as a college fund for local young people.
"It's time for Texas to reap the economic benefits and use that revenue to help Texas students go to college," Senator Ellis explained.
If the plans are approved across the state, citizens from each area will be allowed to vote for or against any planned casino in their home area.
